Socratism may admit the passions as indelibly human, nevertheless, they remain a flaw of humanity in this world. Hofman's explanation of this is that socratism alone offered salvation from the age of disintegration and degeneration. By thwarting death, it can only make possible an eventual regeneration, which may not come about for centuries. So where does that leave socrates? Well, despite the fact that he is a decadent and cannot show the way out of decline and sickness, he is nevertheless valuable in so far as he is a masterful critic and a master of rhetoric.
