Niyaya's Argument for the Self

The Buddhists doubted that the self could be discovered through any kind of causal inference. Gautama proposes the self as something more like a theoretical entity, not observed in itself but rather hypothesized to explain things we can observe. This fits into a wider pattern in Niyaya Vaisheshika where the self is often proven without any appeal to ideas of cause and effect.
