The Origins of Philosophy

Philosophy is the act of giving an account of the universe and man's place in it using the specific methodology of argumentation. The key feature which distinguishes philosophy from earlier forms of knowledge about why the world is the way it is, is the emphasis on argument. Early modern natural philosophers like Robert Flood or Isaac Newton were doing something very different from much earlier philosophers like the ancient Pythagoreans.
