The Darkest Hour in American History

President Calvin Coolidge retired in 1927, leaving the race to succeed him wide open. Former New York Governor Alfred E. Smith became the Democratic nominee. He faced opposition even from his own party for two main reasons: he was a wet who opposed prohibition and secondly, he was Catholic. During the election campaign, Al Smith's religion, his support for immigrants, and his opposition to prohibition would become conflated by his opponents. Out of the 48 states that were part of the union, Smith carried just eight; he lost his state of New York.
