With epithelia, there's this saying that we like to say, which is form equals function. And you know, it's function if you think about it, right? Broadly, if you're going to have a tissue type that's exposed to an environment, its job is to interact with that environment in some way. Sometimes the environment needs something to be released into it. So sometimes epithelia will be secreted. Needs to move things. Sometimes gases need to be moved. The structure of the cell itself tells you what it does.
One of the four tissue types of the body, epithelia lines and protects our organs from the external and internal environment. In this episode, Dr Matt & Dr Mike explain how the different shape and layers of epithelia tell you what function it performs (form = functions) and highlight examples in the body where you can find each type. They also explore cancer, metaplasia, dysplasia, and Dr Matt's mums skin cancer diagnosis and surgery.
