James Madison's Preparation for the Constitution Convention
There are repeated incidents in the war in which it's obvious that he really hasn't given much thought to war making. Madison didn't have an idea that there should be a professional officer corps. He apparently thought that it was just a kind of amateur sport. As far as the appointments that Madison made go, they were so awful.
