The hard problem of consciousness is supposed to consist in some kind of explanatory gap between the observable mechanisms, physical mechanisms of brain activity and the experiential character of our mental life. The inner experience has an inner part, an inner life? Its it is that inner stuff that we acquire when we're perfected as a kind of organism,. We want general reliability. Otherwise we're stuck in radical scepticism. So we have to have room to explain how and why we go wrong
