The History of the State Barrier Fence

By the 1880s, people were building fences in an attempt to keep rabbits out of their property. Often this was not effective at all because there were already rabbits on both sides of the fence and also rabbits like to burrow under things. So eventually construction was begun on what became the state barrier fence from 1901 to 1907. It followed a five-month investigation by Arthur Mason which started in 1896 and a Royal Commission in 1901.
