What Is Modern Monetary Theory?

How much debt is sustainable depends on the level of interest rates. When economists talk about sustainable levels of debt these days, they use the shorthand r minus g. Modern monetary theory became influential or remarked upon in a period when central banks were buying up government debt big time without inflationy consequences. Now we're in a more inflationary world, where it's no longer the case that central banks can engage in acid purchase programmes without inflationary sequences. We should take them very seriously.
