In the pre-industrial era, brewing was largely a domestic activity and it took place women within the household. It was only with industrialization that you get the sort of scale production. Brewing becomes an industry rather kind of cottage craft. And with that it becomes male dominated. There's been a real push to reclaim that Brewster identity in recent decades.
