The Long Range Fighter Intercept Mission of the War
It was the longest range fighter intercept mission of the war to that point. P38G as in golf, lightnings were chosen to fly because they were the only ones that had the legs. Even with the addition of the drop tanks, they would just barely have the range to get out there, do their thing and get back. There would be no dog fighting. If they were to intercept the Japanese, they were going in there, hitting and running and gone. No tangling and farting around. They're going to hit and they're goneBecause they might not get home because they're going to be sucking fumes when they're flying over guadalcanal. Right.
