The State of JSC at the Time

JSC was using C as its intermediate language. It wasn't for quite a while before the compiler was actually ported to x86 chips. Using C as a portable assembler was a path that many compilers took at the time. You had to have swathes of CPP macros and goodness knows what else to compile it.
