The Cracks in Burgess's Life
When do you think the cracks began to show in Burgess's life? Well, I think for him it was the end of the Second World War. And one of the reasons is that there were a series of walk-ins by Russian defectors. The decision to send Burgess to Washington seems almost unbelievable. He was an expert on the Far East and there was a need for a Far East expert there. So he was needed, they felt he was needed in Washington.
