How Did Augustus Use His Private Army?
The pretorian guard was augustus's secret police in rome, and they were very effective in that role. They could move unseen and blend into ods and public spaces, keeping an ear open for words of sedition or plots against augustus. If they uncovered anything of substance, they had the authority to torture people for information and then use that as evidence against the accused, often without trial.
