The Art of Being Lonely
French people can talk perfectly well about being lonely. And they can also articulate what it means to be alone on a retreat in which you feel fine. Montaigne uses the word less solitude in a largely positive way, which is uncharacteristic of modern day French. But he too, in some passages, is using solitude to mean loneliness. So I don't think we should get bogged down in the specifics of terminology in different cultures as reflective of different cultural experiences or even existential experiences. The book has just been translated into Korean.
