The Dutch Republic for about 100, 150 years was the richest country in the world. It didn't really have a king, especially once it threw off Spanish rule. A lot of these were not replicable in many other parts of the world. The fact that the Dutch were small certainly helped with this. Hamad in the homogeneity, especially among the small population helps.
