The Eerons Cold Case in California
In 1994, criminologist Paul Holz opened an old filing cabinet and picked up a menila folder labeled EAR. One of the original investigators had told him about the cold case, and fueled by curiosity, Holz decided to check it out. By this time, the statute of limitations had expired on all of the rapes, meaning the perpetrator couldn't be prosecuted even if he was caught. 8,000 people had been identified as suspects, many of whom had yet to be ruled out. Both perpetrators' DNA was on file, having been collected from their respective crime scenes. However, Holz didn't get an opportunity to compare the samples until 2001.
