How I Learned Swedish as a 12 Year Old
I was sent to Russia as a 12 year old for a month in 1990. My parents who are adventurous spirits and great believers in the power of language thought, Oh, wonderful idea. We'll send her to Russia with a family. Swedish is not an easy language to learn. It's so phenomenally different. And the culture of Sweden is different. Even the weather is different. Everything is very age. I sometimes still have bad dreams like nightmares where I think I'm back and it's my first morning in Russia - but I'm actually so far away from home.
