The Cultural Revolution is a phenomenon I call the self-fulfillment contradiction. The mismatch between the goals of American seeking self-FULFILLMENT and the means they employ to achieve those goals. So, he talks about this and he does a brief analogy from the idea of tectonic plates. And it is as if tens of millions of people had decided simultaneously to conduct risky experiments with their own lives.
