When I get to around 20,000 words of a full-length novel, I often lose track of what's going on with the different threads of the story. This is why I love writing in Scrivener - I can drag and drop and reorder my scenes as I go. Yes, sometimes I end up down a rabbit hole during the draft, but that's okay too because there's gold in the research process for a discovery writer. My characters emerge from the discovery writing process. There are as many different ways of writing as there are writers, but we all end up with a finished book regardless of how we get there. You have to find the process that works for you
