The Effects of Gene Loss on the Brain of Vampire Bats

Vampire bats have a gene that lets them slough off extra iron in a really unique way. This is not the only genomic change that contributes to the ability to handle and to cope with this large amounts of iron. One of the other genes that we found is an enzyme that is expressed in the liver. And in the brain it's the only enzyme that can degrade, to metabolize a certain cholesterol compound. These receptors mediate learning, memory, and social behavior.
