Zhao Chao, Qian's ex-boyfriend, expressed relief about the arrest to the Globe and Mail by phone. Brian Dixon applied for bail and the hearing for that was eventful, but the details were covered under a publication ban. A former York University media relations officer said in the decade before Qian's death, there had been 66 reported incidents of sexual assault at university. In response to community and student pressure, York had commissioned a safety order two years before Qian's murder.
