The south coast of Italy is traditionally much poorer than the north. Is that as a result of slavery or is there something else which is causing that? Well, I think a lot of that is to do with the way that the north managed to develop these urban centers and then developed into sort of industrial revolution industry. So I think that was less of a problem, but you might, I think, put your finger on something because if there was one area of Italy which was particularly exposed to rains by the Turks from the end of the 15th century onwards, it was southern Italy.
