i was interested to see an anecdote from daniel elsburg, the author of the doomsday machine. He describes people working at rand doing nuclear strategy at the beginning of the cold war. They actually thought that nuclear war was likely pretty soon. But it certainly hass done a lot better than those worst fears. And i don't think it it was crazy to worry that that dynamic might turn out to be unstableye, no, not at all.
