The Shepherd King: The Story of David

David is perhaps the most ubiquitous character in the Old Testament. It's not hard to imagine that Michelangelo would have been drawn to the shepherd king. His story and complexity of his character, as both an adulterer and a man after God's own heart, aligned at least in some ways with Michelangelo's struggle between sensuality and devotion to the Lord. One curious detail embedded in David's narrative and scripture is the frequent mention of his beautiful appearance.
