If someone reads a study that's been published peer reviewed in a journal and maybe a fancy journal, most people in the real world assume it's true. And so I don't think there's anything different about tech people in their misunderstanding of academic life. The idea that someone on the internet is saying something absurd to get attention and clicks or views or friends is not our default. It comes up fairly often, what people write and what they say is not always what they believe.
