Dante's Myth of Ulysses

The myth of Ulysses runs across all three cantos in Dante's divine comedy. It is the story of Adesius wandering across the Mediterranean after the Homeric war and how he finds his way ultimately back home. The voyage was going to take them beyond the pillars of Hercules through the straights of Gibraltar until they came to a great mountain but Ulysses arrived too soon. A great world pull consumes the ship and drags him and his sailors down and takes Ulysses to the place that Dante first encounters him in the Inferno.
