The Importance of Consultation With the Inuit
Before Confederation, Newfoundland and Labrador didn't have anything like the Indian Act in place. The Mi'kmaq were living in discrete indigenous communities such as Flat Bay and Khan River. But they too were not consulted at all as indigenous people. They knew that the referendum were going on and some of them voted,. but they had no idea that the Indian Act even existed.
