The Future of Genetic Engineering
I was teaching in a school last week where six farmers were doing genetic engineering at a basic level. Is it not going to be the case that someone is going to do it sooner or later? I'm not denying that it's possible, but we have to weigh up the likelihood of that occurring versus the certainty that an influenza pandemic will emerge from an unknown animal source. Have we reached a point in our history where one of the basic principles of science, which is freedom of inquiry, is genuinely being challenged?
