According to the prosperity gospel, God saves his true believers in their earthly lives from poverty, illness and other difficulties. The idea is that God will return this money to churchgoers tenfold - they will reap what they sow. Giving money is a way to show God that you are a believer, not only that but you are willing to work to show it.
