The Skin of Black Men in a Prison
Inmates' skin is this spot within prisons in which there's both this invisibility and this hyper-visibility of science as well. In chapter one, you really expand on this both how the visibility and the invisibility are simultaneous in the work of Kligman by showing us the way that skin operates as an apparatus. And you're specifically bringing back in photographs that Kligman took in his research that were kind of extreme close-ups,. The skin of Black men in the prison had been exposed to chemicals that actually changed the pigmentation of the skin.
