The Evolution of Eutry
The female state costs more energy to produce fruits than the male one does, so we think it's unlikely that in this case stress is involved. We can just observe it over time and see what happens to that branch. From our point of view, we're particularly interested in that tree because it's an example of an ancient eutry. Eutries occur across quite a wide range of geography in Britain, in Europe, and then they even extend into North Africa and Western Asia. In certain areas there's a degree of threat to them, so what we're keen to do is to bring into cultivation a wide variety of samples of eutry for research.
