In 1969, there's a big student strike at Columbia over the relation of the school to the Pentagon. LaRouche is kind of like picking recruits from the progressive labor party. And so he was able to appeal to a lot of the more like kind of middle class intellectual Marxist types by emphasizing the intellectual side of things. He ends up building a kind of faction within SDS over time.
