What Do We Need to Do to Better Deal With the Past?
i wonder how you think of your role as a historian who's dean at a theological and historical school. What can we learn to give us the grace to try and better deal with teddy roosevelt's past by removing his statue from the national museum of history and putting it in storage? You know, there's a lot of wisdom we can learn in other contexts. And i had a striking moment when i was celebrating the five hundredth anniversary of the protestant reformation. Why is it still there? Because our jewish and german friends said, history is a great teacher. We need to see what our people did in the past, both in their nobility and their failure.
