Between Copernicus and Galileo around that time changes in Europe happened which puts the really lived contemplative experiential part of Christianity in the background. I think it was a confluence of Protestantism protesting with good reason against many of the accesses of and the corruption in the Catholic Church at that time. When we now talk about the word mystic we think about things which are sort of fake and not very clear etc but if you actually go back to the literature of the mystics in the Middle Ages they were the most quantitative people of their time. Every country and every culture has had both the inquisitive tendency to analyze nature as well as our own mind.
