Penguin Books and the Obscenity Law

Penguin books was prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act 1959 at the Old Bailey in London from 20 October to two November 1960. Two million copies of the 32 year old book were sold in less than a year. Penguin books had not run afoul of the obscenity law and publishing lady Chatterley's lover. Just days later, the publisher released all the copies it had. And the 200,000 copy print run sold out.
