The Tension on the Left Between Not Wanting to Look Soft on Crime and Not Want to Have a Gun
How can you have all of those in one political party? How does that work? I think it's difficult. And I think part of it is just an old fashioned failure of leadership and honesty. Bill Clinton was actually very good about talking about these kinds of trade-offs. He acknowledged that there were lots of people in his coalition that don't like crime. There is room for a Democrat to speak to this kind of stuff intelligently in a way that would win over voters.
