Darwin spent five weeks on the Galapagos Islands in 18 35. He was inspired to develop his theory of evolution after seeing creatures that were similar, but also a little bit different. The tortoises had different shells depending on the kind of island they lived on and finches looked similar, but their beaks were always a little bitdifferent. This is why we think of two iconic creatures: the tortoise and the finch.
