The Hotel Teresa in Harlem in the Thirties

In 19 37, the heirs of gustav seidenberg were sued by two african american guests who had been denied rooms. By this time, many white owned businesses had moved out of harlem and there was a real demand for high end accommodation for black guests. Ebony magazine called the hotel the social headquarters of negro America. Little by little, black celebrities, shunned by other hotels, made the teresa their home for sometimes months at a time. In just 300 rooms, the hotel was booked for months in advance for most of the 19 forties.
