Cash and gold were actually one of the very few assets that didn't fall as hard as stocks or bonds. That made them a top performer, even if they didn't like to gain 20% in a year. If you hold a cash from 1999 to 2021, you would have made $150 out of $100 invested. Whereas if you had invested in stocks, that same $100 would have surged 394%.
