The Substantial Form Explains the Whole and the Being of All the Parts

The reason to posit that the dog has a soul is that it's capable of smelling. This can't be explained simply through the olfactory nerves and the part of the brain that processes olfactory input. Substantial form explains the being of the whole as a whole and also the being of all the parts. And then there has to be something that explains why things that exist at certain points can change, which is prime matter.
