Dr. Bergeman: It is unsustainable for the wealthy and the powerful to imagine that they can have a safe, good life without connection to the neighbors. He says in Christian tradition, Jesus became a rallying point for making visible the left behind. The Roman Empire didn't mind having lots of people left behind, but it couldn't tolerate their being made visible.
