The Victorian Divided Skirt
The divided skirt emerged in the Victorian era to enable women to embrace more active lifestyles. Divided skirts were basically wide-legged collots, which gave the illusion of conventional fashion from the outside. Yet the wearer could walk with long strides, pedal bicycles and sit a stride horses. Some people were quite threatened by the side of wearing what was perceived as men's clothing or engaging in men's activities.
