The first dataset for handwritten character recognition is from 1959. Bill Heileman was trying to make OCR readers at the time, which is kind of crazy to think that you're trying to do that in the 1950s. So what he did was he built a scanner that was supposed to be a general-purpose scanner. And he collected 50 different alphabets from 50 different writers and put them on punch cards then published a paper.
