Augustine has worked to explain why the recent sack of Rome in the fall of 2010 was not at all a blemish on the glorious ascendancy of Christianity. In God's, Augustine writes, never protected the societies that worship them from ruin and spoliation. Aeneid cites Virgil's fictional epic as historical evidence that pagan gods did not protect their worshippers.
