Statisticians are confronted with the problem of some data. They have a hypothesis or a model about how those data were generated by some latent states sometimes known as hidden states. So for example they might have a hypothesis that this drug treatment materially affected some pathophysiology but it's only the observable data that the doctor can get from the patients at hand. The statistician now has to infer was there a drug effect and what she will do is create a generative model.
