The History of the Castella Marése War
By 1930, the Italian underworld in New York had two main factions. One was led by Joe the Vass who largely kept his gang to other Sicilians and southern Italians. The other group was called the Maranzano faction which was led by a man called Salvatore Maranzano. This war is viewed by most as the beginning of the New York mob, as we know it. But beneath the surface, it was about competing visions of what the Mafia should be.
