The Directory of France

Many Frenchmen believed their country had seen the birth of a new, more advanced form of social organization. By exporting the revolution abroad, the directory might shore up its domestic support among those who still believed in that crusading national mission. The members of the directory themselves were probably not sentimental enough to get caught up in this type of idealism but they certainly understood its power.
