CHAPTER

Is the Government in the Business of Marriage?

In the UK, single earner households are weighted against in our tax system. You end up paying more tax if you have a traditional nuclear model than if you have two parents earning. And so I think given that the government does have to make choices on things like tax regimes,I think that those choices should be in favor of marriage rather than against it.

So just in general, why is the government in the business of marriage, I've often thought about this kind of politically from a libertarian perspective, just let people do whatever they want to do. You want to get married fine. If you want to have a contract and just live together, that's fine. Let people do whatever they want. Would your answer be something like because marriage is good for society in the same way that home ownership is. So I get a, I get to write off the interest on my mortgage, for example, this is the government telling me, we like, you know, own homes. So in a way, I get a write off because I'm married and I have a kid. So I get another write off. And that's the government's way of saying we think marriage is good.
Speaker 1
Yeah, I mean, there's a bigger story here about the government becoming ever larger as it's taking over functions previously performed by the church and the family. So it used to be that the government didn't care very much about your sexual relationships because the church and the family cared a great deal. Whereas now the church and the family have retreated. And so you have the government taking over various tasks, including regulation of relationships. I mean, I do think that, I do think marriage is better in general. There's copious data. I have it in chapter eight on why marriage is better, particularly for children. And so I think given that the government does have to make choices on things like tax regimes, I think that those choices, that the thumb on the scale should be in favor of marriage rather than against it. Which is not currently the case actually. I mean, I can't speak to America, which is obviously more complex as well as the state. But in the UK, for instance, single earner households actually are weighted against in our tax system. You end up paying more tax if you have a traditional nuclear model than if you have two parents earning. So it's not the case currently in the UK policy that everything's weighted towards the old fashioned model. Quite the opposite.
