The soil that we plant into with a penetrometer is very free of compaction. But if you go down beneath this, you know, rye residue and try to make a hole to plant into, you can't do it easily. And so the moisture content is a big part of whether plant roots are able to get through the soil. It's much easier to get through a moist soil than it is toget through a dry soil.
